Integration Project: Michael HarfordProject OverviewThe objective is integrating available online legal research and materials resources into the courses MNGT 610 and MNGT 261. There are numerous legal research and materials online. This project would review these resources, identify the accessibility, and devise lessons for the graduate and undergraduate course which integrate these into learning objectives. The project would review other courses in the legal area for benchmarks, review literature on their use, and provide a map of the technology accessed resources.
Project DetailsThe primary objective is integrating available online legal research and material resources into the course MNGT 610, Legal Issues in Business transactions. Background:The course, MNGT 610, was developed by Michael Harford in response to the recommendation of the MSU College of Business National Advisory Board. The course was approved by the appropriate graduate committees and added to the curriculum and schedule. Pt3 funds were sought to insure online materials and legal research aids could be identified and integrated. Activities:The identification of the resources took place in preparation for and concurrently with course offering. The attached listing represents only a small portion of the material and online sources reviewed, but represents readily available and easily used resources. Course enrollment cohorts consisted of three main types of students: those taking the course as part of the requirements for an MBA; those taking the course as a content area certification for education; and, others. Enrollment in two section offerings tended to be three quarters of the first category, twenty percent for the second category, and the remaining five percent in the other category. Students searched for databases for legal research and for other databases containing legal issue content. Assessment:An end of the term learning and process assessment is utilized. Students report preference for online learning activities and integration of technology. The course design and technology integration provided opportunities for students to more deeply pursue areas of their own interest, a highly favored feature of the process. Teachers reported satisfaction with identification of sources of material for use in their classes. The secondary objective is integrating available online research and material resources into MNGT 261, Legal Environment of Business. Background:The course, MNGT 261, is an introductory course in the legal environment of business, required of all students seeking a degree in business administration and for students seeking other degrees but choosing a business administration minor. A survey of the legal system, contracts, business organizations, and government regulation of business, the course is required in most colleges of business around the country. Activities:The students are directed to utilize a reading journal, recording their ventures into both secondary and primary materials available online. Assessment:Students reported in an end of the term learning and process assessment a great satisfaction with this element. A principal outcome was the elimination of a traditional textbook and the selection of an exercise activity text. A third objective included the development of an article. A draft has been composed and is in revision.
