Integration Project: Sarah Levin

Project Overview

The purpose of this project is to transform Health 151 by integrating technology into it. This is an important goal because Health 151 is a general education classs, taught to hundreds of students every semester. On the current schedule, there are 10 sections and 7 different instructors/professors. It is imperative that we standardize the instruction so that all students are exposed the same experience. Integrating technology into the course content will enhance the students' learning (both by holding their attention and by actively engaging them).

I. TRIABILITY SURVEY

A survey was sent along with the curriculum page to the list of current faculty/staff teaching Hlth 151 (via e-mail). The script and the questions (and responses) are scripted below. Of five instructors, four answered. The fifth is a member of the football staff and not a member of the department.

Greetings. If I read the names right from the spring catalogue, you all teach HLTH 151.

Based on the syllabus that Jennifer and Mary created (I think) and based on the website that accompanys the text book by Insel and Roth, I created this "curriculum page".

You are more than welcome to use it for your class -- or parts of it. You can paste it into Blackboard I think?!

What I hope you will do is take a look at it and answer these very simple "triability" questions -- the questions are based on Diffusion Theory. Please use a 1 - 5 likert scale with one being NO and five being VERY much.

(1) The page is better than a paper syllabus [1 - 5]
(RESPONSES: 2 fives, 1 four, 1 three)

(2) The page is easy to use [1 - 5]
(RESPONSES: 3 fives, 1 four)

(3) The page is easy to understand for me [1 - 5]
(RESPONSES: 3 fives, 1 four)

(4) The page is easy to understand for my students (in my opinion) [1 - 5]
(RESPONSES: 3 fives, 1 four)

(5) The page could be adopted for my class with out a lot of time invested on my part
(RESPONSES: 2 fives, 2 fours)

(6) The page could be adopted for my class with out a lot of risk [1 - 5]
(RESPONSES: 1 five, 3 fours)

(7) The page could be modified over time [1 -5]
(RESPONSES: 4 fives)

(8) Anything else? ____________________________________
"This is going to be very helpful to the students and instructors of Health 151, Wellness: Theory to Action"
"It is truly a wonderful idea. There is so much you could do with such a page and sharing of information."

Conclusion: Such responses suggest adoption will be likely!

II. Satisfaction Survey

I sent a survey to students who work in the department (via e-mail attachment). The questions, and responses are summarized below.

Greetings,
As a work study or GA in HPS, you are being asked to take a look at the curriculum page below (or attached) .. It is a syllabus with live links for Wellness (Hlth 151).

We need student input and Dr. Brown has ok'd your giving input. Please respond to the following questions and e-mail me back after you try out the page.

Please use a 1 - 5 likert scale with one being NO and five being VERY much.

(1) The page is better than a paper syllabus [1 - 5]
(RESPONSES: 2 fives, 1 four)

(2) The page is easy to use [1 - 5]
(RESPONSES: 2 fives, 1 four)

(3) The page is easy to understand for me [1 - 5]
(RESPONSES: 2 fives, 1 four)

(4) The page is likely to enhance my learning of Wellness [1 - 5]
(RESPONSES: 1 five, 2 fours)

(5) I like the page [1 - 5]
(RESPONSES: 1 fives, 1 four (and ½))

(6) What comments do you have about the page?

"I looked at the page you sent me and i think it is great. I gave all the questions a 5. I think it would be VERY helpful to have access to all of that information and the additional sites right there for you. Everybody uses computers now so it seems like there is a better chance that the students would look at the work on the computer than if it is just on paper. Plus they will have to use that format in the upper level classes, so it would help prepare them. I think it would have helped me out a lot to have this when I took the class.

"this is very interesting. i think it is better than a paper syllabus because it allows the students to interact and become interested in the objectives of the course rather than just reading it."

"I like the page and a lot if the sites that you put on there...especially the ask alice and the estimate the cost of a baby for a year. I wasn't too excited about the Kearl's page on death...it just didn't appeal to me."

(7) What changes would enhance the page

"I personally think that is is fine the way it is. it is a very good idea. good job"

Conclusion: though a small sample, it seems the students like the curriculum page!
