What is EDUC 599/620?

EDUC 599/620 is Morehead State University's adaptation of a nationally recognized online course, Teachers Discovering Compu ters. The university has adapted this course for pre-service teachers, student teachers and university faculty. The course is designed so that students will learn how to integrate technology effectively into the classroom setting in order to positively impact student learning. The curriculum for this course is based on the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) recommended foundations in technology for all teachers. Students are able to tailor the course to fit specific disciplines and develop projects and lesson plans for use in a variety of settings.

Why should I take it?

For pre-service and student teachers, EDUC 599/620 will prepare its graduated teachers to compete in the job market and become familiar with technology. The course was designed to specifically to prepare pre-service and student teachers to meet Kentucky's new Technology Standard X and the new ISTE and NCATE technology standards.

For faculty, the course is part of a comprehensive effort at Morehead State University to infuse technology into the curriculum at all levels. Besides receiving guidance on integrating technology into their courses, faculty who successfully complete the course will receive a $500 stipend and become eligible to apply for a Faculty Integration Grant from the PT3 program. These grants provide $1,500 which may received in the form of a stipend, equipment purchases, or as release time.

Preservice and Student Teachers

NOTE: ADMISSION TO THE TEP IS A PREREQUISITE.

To enroll in EDUC 599, students must have an active email account. This is how the instructor communicates with you and other students in the class. When registering for the course listed as EDUC 599 in the course catalog, students will be asked for an email address. The text for the course is provided free of charge. There are three options when registering for EDUC 599:

  1. Upon entrance to the TEP: Taking EDUC 599 at this time allows students to receive three hours of undergraduate credit for the course. This option is strongly recommended for all students.
  2. Student teaching option I (professional semester): If the course is not taken before the student teaching semester, students may take an abbreviated version of the course as part of their professional semester opportunity to enhance their ability to integrate technology within plans.
  3. Student teaching option II (graduate credit): For this option, the course must be taken as 3 of the last 12 hours before graduation. This version of the course entails more course work and additional projects. Upon successful completion, students will be awarded three hours of graduate credit.
